What if the roles were switched ?

Started by Elizabeth Mitchell in Uncategorized Aug 1, 2012. 0 Replies

Most of the time you don't see as many teen guys as you see teen girls worrying about having sex. A reason for that would be the woman is the one who carries the child for nine months. If a guy was…Continue

is it really that glamourous??

Posted by Asantewaa Adwoa Boateng on April 10, 2012 at 8:31pm 1 Comment

Is it just me or is teenage pregnancy totally glamorized now?  Every time I log onto facebook someone else has tagged 50 of my friends on a picture of their newborn or 3 month old baby.  THAT SCARES ME!  I'm not saying that new life shouldn't be celebrated, i'm just saying that a chill runs down my spine when I realize that we, the youth that choose to press pause and WAIT, have become the minority.  I am simply not ready to have a baby right now, and I refuse to believe that many of the…

Making Smart Choices for Spring Break

Posted by Carrie DuPre on April 2, 2012 at 2:04pm 0 Comments

Working in education, I know that Spring Break can be a great time to relax and recharge before the sprint-to-the-end-of-the-semester begins. But I also know that it can be a dangerous time for teens and young adults who are traveling and perhaps not always thinking about their safety.

I just blogged about Spring Break safety on the education page of GoUpstate.com (…

Posted by Sheila Snoddy on February 14, 2012 at 10:25am 0 Comments

This week's blog post is written by Sheila Snoddy who works with the GIrl Scouts and is an active member of the Not Right Now Community Action Group.

As a teenager growing up, I experienced many wonderful relationships that were all different in nature.  My relationship with my parents, friends, teachers, church and community members, each had their own, unique way of making me understand and feel that I was important to them and that they wanted to have a healthy…

Social Media - Fab or Fad?

While attending a recent youth workshop on social media hosted by the SC Campaign’s FABULOUS Health Communications Specialist Taylor Wilson, I learned a few things about the art of social media. My discoveries included:

1)      As a blogger, I tend to RANT. If you look back at any of my previous blogs on Personal Perspectives, you’ll notice that I’m often motivated to write because something or someone has ticked me off (see my blog on lingerie football if you don’t believe…

Teen Mom from MTV comes to Spartanburg

It's okay. You can admit it. You wouldn't be the first person to be a Teen Mom or 16 and Pregnant addict. Adults and young people alike find themselves being pulled into the saga of the day-to-day lives of the real life "characters" on these two reality shows. For Teen Mom in particular, we've been able to follow a much larger span of time to learn not just what having a baby is like but also what living with a toddler is like, what it's like to juggle relationships with…

Amazing male mentor gone

Those who are part of the Not Right Now project talk often about a lack of positive male role models for our youth - particular our boys and teen males. Last week, the city of Spartanburg lost one of our most outstanding role models when Brian Wofford, Director of Parks and Recreation, was killed suddenly in a motorcycle…

Interest in a youth program?

Recent survey data in Spartanburg has shown that adults feel the community could be doing a better job to help prevent teen pregnancy and that they aren't really aware of what programs are currently available for young people to help prevent teen pregnancy.

Spartanburg currently has 7 organizations that we call "implementation partners."…
